The color of Ken

I started this blog in dutch about one year ago. Returning from a fantastic holiday in India, I was fed up with the 'way of the west' and its arrogance towards other parts of the world. Connected with that I lost faith in modern science (or in the way it is used in society at the moment) It occurred to me that in many ways it's role in western society has become that of the old time religion: a way to control thought. In a sense, there is a fundamentalistic tendency in the mostly atheist or laist societies of Europe. This fundamentalist atheism seems to serve economic interests. Science, so to say, has become 'opium for the people'. In the past year I used the blog to explore my own beliefs, to search for new ways to view the world and to express sentiments towards actual events like the mohammed drawings or the ID-debate.

Of large influence on my new way of thinking is Ken Wilber. I read Frank Vissers biography 'Ken Wilber, thinking as passion'. Knowing he teamed up with Don Beck on his more recent work, I also read 'Spiral Dynamics'.
The way in wich conflict between Frank Visser and Ken Wilber is handeled by Wilber and some disappointment in reading 'Spiral Dynamics' bring me to publish my first post in English to express my views.

Most of the interesting part of the 'Spiral Dynamics'- book can also be found on the internet, i.e. the descriptions of the different vMeme categories, the difference between first tier and second tier. Distinguishing the various meme-colors to me was not immediatly clear and the book has some merit in offering great exercice in that.
What was disappointing to the book, was the explanation on the managing of vMemes. Here the authors satisfy with a simplistic version of books on 'how to point noses in the same direction'.
Moreover some very obnoxious Americo-centered comments/interpretations have made it to the book. For Americans, that is not so unusual, but for authors that tell you how to talk to different vMemes that's unforgivable.
I desperatly wish the 'spiral dynamics' to be taken seriously for it's a theory that has clear merits for the modern times, but in order to be taken seriously the authors should take their audience serious, all of the audience not just the American.

In his conflict with Frank Visser and other critics, Ken Wilber takes on the role of Wyatt Earp to shoot at his opponents.
Recently, Wilber is fighting a lot against what he calls boomeritis. By this he means the narcistic attitude of the Baby Boom generation, a generation stuck in the green first tier meme and unable to take on to the yellow second tier meme. He, of course, has according to himself allready made it to yellow (or beyond).
Now, I am but a humble Belgian engineer but with no degree in philosophy or any other social science, but is openly declaring yourself as being better then others not one of the more clear symptoms of narcisism.
Moreover, a major characteristic of second tier is the absence of antagonism with first tier. While first tier memes have tendency to fight each other, second tier is respectfull of the first tier memes knowing they all are rooted in specific social conditions and therefor not merely changed by words.
The Wilber-stand is antagonistic towards his opponents. Therefor Wilber must be in the same tier as his opponents (either first or second).
Finally, who the fuck is Wyatt Earp?
I knew the name from some Kevin Costner western movie. Wikiing the name gives you an idea of the man, some mythical cowboy-pioneer it seems, maybe some kind of founding father in the USA, clearly someone rooted in American history, and as such a very bad metaphor to use in a discussion with international critics (consider e.g. Frank Visser has dutch nationality).
For someone who calls himself an integralist, Wilber should have known better. Using culturally embedded symbols in an international discussion is not exactly doing the job in fighting etno-centrism.

So, to conclude a note to Wilber and Beck (my ego is jumping for joy in the foolish prospect of being read by one of them):

• Both of you are doing good jobs in creating new paradigms.
• Both of you tend to forget the world outside the USA.
• Both of you, in order to be taken seriously, must realise that, in Europe at least, gurus (or pandits if you like, Ken) either in the management field or in the spiritual field are generally not taken seriously, no matter how sound the message is. So don't try to be one.
• Ken, get your ego to shut up so you can move to second tier and tell us how it really is.
• Ken, the II is beginning to smell like a sect. Use a deodorant

A not so humble Belgian

Aquarius: het ontwaken van het bewustzijn

‘This is the dawning of the age of aquarius’.

Wie oud genoeg is , herinnert zich misschien het liedje nog uit de musical ‘Hair’.

Astrologisch zou het begin van de 21ste eeuw de overgang betekenen van het Vissen tijdperk naar dat van de Waterman. Een tijdperk dat zou gekenmerkt worden door een terugkeer van de spiritualiteit.
Voor ik aan deze blog begon te schrijven, zou ik iedereen die mij dat probeerde wijs te maken op zijn minst met een scheef oog bekeken hebben.
Intussen heb ik bij mijn omzwervingen op het internet zoveel signalen opgevangen, zoveel dingen ontdekt dat ik ervan overtuigt ben dat er inderdaad iets van die aard op til is.
En ik heb het echt niet over de doorsnee New Age toestanden waarvan de zweverigheid en/of perfiditeit mij nog steeds even erg doen walgen als om het even welk fundamentalisme.

Ik heb het over verschillende gerespecteerde wetenschappers (en hier en daar een ondernemer of een politicus), professoren aan universiteiten met klinkende namen als Oxford, Princeton, Yale etc.

Eerder heb ik reeds naar Ken Wilber verwezen die vanuit oosterse filosofie/spiritualiteit en de psychologie van het bewustzijn vertrokken is en wiens missie het is om tot een integratie van geloof (om het even welke overtuiging) en wetenschap te komen.

Het dichtst bij Wilber staat Don Beck. In recenter werk verwerkt Wilber de ideeën van ene Don Beck. Beck beschrijft in het boek Spiral Dynamics de evolutie van mensheid op basis van opkomende en wegebbende golven van vMemes, zeg maar samenhangende waarden, modes, gedragswijzes etc. De theorie vormt een nieuwe antropologie/organisatieleer/ontwikkelingspsychologie.
Beck onderscheid tot nog toe in de geschiedenis 8 verschillende vMeme-klasses. Interessant is vooral dat de laatste twee een complexer karakter hebben dan de vorige zes en dat die nu nog maar pas op de oevers van ons bewustzijn komen aanrollen. Van deze twee is de meest recente expliciet spiritueel van aard (!).
Ook bij Beck komt zij het niet zo expliciet een integratie/synthese tot stand. Interessant is ook dat Beck raadgever is geweest bij de omwentelingen in Zuid-Afrika.
Wilber en Beck ben ik momenteel nog aan het verkennen dus hierover later zeker nog meer.

Fascinerend is ook Ervin Laszlo. Van oorsprong een gelauwerd pianist is hij nu een doctor in filosofie en vader van de systeemtheorie en de algemene evolutieleer. Naast directiefuncties binnen de Verenigde Naties en onderzoeksopdrachten aan uiteenlopende topuniversiteiten (Yale, Princeton, etc) is hij ook de oprichter van de Club van Budapest, een stichting die topmensen uit uiteenlopende disciplines bij elkaar brengt en sociaal en ecologisch innovatieve projecten ondersteunt (de club heeft een waslijst aan ereleden waaronder Gorbatchov, de Dalai Lama)
De theoriën van Laszlo trekken een lijn van het quantum-niveau en de cosmos naar het bewustzijn en besteden ook expliciet aandacht aan het naar waarde schatten van spiritualiteit.

Erich Jantsz is een astrofysicus die een synthese heeft gemaakt van alle vormen van zelf-organisatie in de natuur om zo tot een theorie van ‘emergent evolution’ (Voortschrijdende evolutie) te komen waarin een stap naar een ruimer (spiritueel?) bewustzijn wel eens de volgende stap zou kunnen zijn.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi tenslotte is een psycholoog die vertrokken is vanuit de studie van creativiteit, en alzo het verschijnsel 'Flow' heeft ontdekt als een extatische toestand waarin men kan terechtkomt bij het leveren van grootse prestaties. In flow zijn betekent helemaal in het nu zijn en met een grote helderheid weten wat men op elk moment moet doen. Hij plaatst het begrip nu in evolutionaire context als noodzakelijk in het overlevingsmechanisme van de mensheid op weg naar grotere complexiteit. Hij speculeert ook dat iedereen met een set instructies wordt geboren (een soort interne drijfveer) die hij kan verwezenlijken maar niet moet. Hij wordt daarin geremd door maatschappelijke belemmeringen (culturele instructies). De realisatie van de interne set noemt het transcendentie omdat de mens daarna ontsnapt aan de wetmatigheden die hem zouden moeten sturen.

Met betrekking tot Csikszentmihalyi is er nog een ander aspect dat naar het naderend Aquarius-tijdperk wijst.In verband ditlaatste is er namelijk dikwijls sprake van Indigo-kinderen. Dit zouden in het new age denken de kinderen zijn die momenteel geboren worden en die de opdracht hebben de overgang naar het nieuwe tijdperk te bewerkstelligen.
De eigenschappen die aan deze kinderen worden toegedicht, lopen nogal gelijk met datgene wat men in de geneeskunde ADHD of ADD noemt. Nu hebben AD(H)D'ers de eigenschap goed te kunnen hyperfocussen. Dat hyperfocussen vertoont grote gelijkenissen met de Flow van Csikszentmihalyi.
Laat het aantal AD(H)D kinderen nu toch niet explosief aan het groeien zijn zeker

Deze theoriën blijven grotendeels onbesproken op de fora en websites van sceptici, maar zoals de recentelijke discussie die is losgebarsten op Wikipedia over Integrale Theorie doet vermoeden, is dit slechts een kwestie van tijd. Ik ben er zeker van dat de tijd dan zal kantelen.

Misschien spreken we dus over een tiental jaar over Wilber, Laszlo, Jantsz. etc zoals we nu over Copernicus, Bruno, Galilei spreken, als bevrijders van ons denken.
